I am becoming a big fan of Thomas Paine. Here is his wikiquote page.
2 quotes from Thomas Paine:
"The sublime and the ridiculous are often so nearly related, that it is difficult to class them separately. One step above the sublime makes the ridiculous, and one step above the ridiculous makes the sublime again." ~ Thomas Paine 1795
-- and here is a zinger ----
"The christian religion is a parody on the worship of the Sun, in which they put a man whom they call Christ, in the place of the Sun, and pay him the same adoration which was originally paid to the Sun." ~ Thomas Paine 1791

Great quotes. Don't recall either from my reading Paine, so great find. But I've always preferred the Moon myself, more texture and luster, I think
well, I think the moon had mythological conterparts too... I am not sure what, but I remember that the Egyptians definately had dieties linked to the moon. I will have to check, but I think there are lunar calendars that predate solar calendars too.
I think every man in this world is born with fear and love for something greater than himself. That's why we have religions and beliefs.
It's just a 'link' to our Creator put within ourselves.
Aldhis, that is very sincere, and an interesting point of view. When I am at my least cynical I hold a similar view point, but I have a little nihilism in my blood that makes me a doubting Thomas. (Get it, Doubting Thomas).
