Shaker Gift Drawing Collage

Shaker Collage

Detail from my collage called "The Shaker Cartoon," based on the obscure gift drawings made during a revitilization of the Shakers after their founder Ann Lee died. This is the central drawing of 6 drawings stacked into a pyramid shape.

I am going to be really busy for the next couple of days getting ready for my show with Jamie Boling in Richmond Virginia at Transmission Gallery. I will try to post interesting stuff as always, but don't be surprised if there is a day when I don't get to post.

Plus, good news from the Drawing Center (second application):

Dear William,

Congratulations! You have been accepted into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. We are pleased to add your portfolio to our online Artist Registry. The Artist Registry is a resource used by The Drawing Center’s curatorial staff as well as by other arts professionals (curators, gallerists, and scholars, among others).

Thanks for including the close-up/detail photograph!

It really shows how much detail you put into your work. My mind wonders what the 2 characters are saying to each other...

hummm...
someone should create a language for them like Tolkin did for the Elves - then you could add stuff to those speech bubbles!

****

And...
CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptence into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program!

I know I am excited about being included in the Drawing Center artists registry. I keep plugging away!

Hey D, I became really interested in the Shaker's after visiting their preserved village outside of Pittsfield Massachusetts. So I bought a book about Ann Lee, the founder of the American branch of the Shakers. She was a very interesting person, illiterate, multiple children who all died young, born in England, travelled to America and started the Shakers which after her death went through a crisis. So they started making these drawings, which they said came directly from visions given to them, hence "gift drawings." The vision was the gift, they didn't give the drawings away. Anyways it is a pretty interesting story, and I made this when I was reading a lot about it.

Just got back from Richmond, the opening went well. Crowded. So that is good. I will post something substantial about it soon, with Pics and Video.

Thanks Deryke, Manz, Papercages for the helpul observations and support leading up to the show!!!
