Is the obsession with new technique, or to put it in other words - doing something "your own way that only you can do" (there are other problems with this now that I think of it), the dying gasp of modernism's focus on formalism? The good side of this is, being who you are - working towards your strength...
Does either the literal object or the psychological/mythical/narrative object have to win? Can they both be strong?
If the ideas are there, can't people just work in ways that are tried and true? I mean that's what Eddie Martinez does, and everyone seems to like him.
