Gregory Gillespie

unknown person, Gregory Gillespie, Bill Donovan

I found this photo yesterday, it is an important image to me because Gregory was my hero, and he killed himself about a year after this picture was taken. That is me on the right when I was 21 or 22.

The show in the background of the photo was a really good show, it was in the UMass Gallery in the South West section of the campus. I got to help hang it, and I got some gesso on my shoes that I didn't clean off because "I got it hanging a Gillespie show."

On a Diet, Gained a Pound Anyways, Drawing (Video)

video
This is a video of me in my studio. I have shifty eyes in it for some reason, I wonder if that's how I look all the time?

I am going to be in a new magazine about art and music on Long Island called New York Twist. Pretty cool. I have to photograph some stuff again for it, because last time I took the photos they want I didn't have real lighting and they look like crap.

Don't know if anyone noticed, but I made a couple of changes on the site. I shortened the amount of posts that appear on the first page down to five, because I figure that is probably a week's worth of posts, and if you want to read more they are listed in the sidebar, or you can click on the older posts on the bottom right below the last post. I also redid the colors to the bookstore, which has sold several books lately good to see you guys can read, I put a lot of thought into what is included in the bookstore, click here for the bookstore.

New Sketchbook Drawing

I drew the colored area with a Japenese multi-colored pen I bought at Muji, it is a cool store on Broadway. The black and white landscape is done with Rapidograph pens.

Idea

I just took a shower. I had a long day in Brooklyn.

Anyways I was thinking about showing someone I had just met some of my drawings from Afghanistan, (click the picture below to see them).

Afghanistan War Journal/Notebooks

I was thinking about what motivated me to make these drawings, because out of everything I have ever made they have gotten the most attention. I couldn't think of anything specific, but I did realize that I made them without any expectations, in fact, I wasn't even sure I was going to live through the time I had left in Afghanistan so I was actually making drawings where they were whatever I wanted to draw right at that moment - as if I was going to die the next day.

I don't have any profound insights into this, but potentially there is a connection between uninhibited drawings and drawings people are interested in?

On a side note, Nice to see that the traffic has been pretty high for the blog lately, thanks.
